Tender: Komati Power Station to move to renewable energy

Eskom has issued a tender seeking a service provider to drive the Komati Power Station socio-economic development plan.

This is to assist with the transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

DEADLINE: 3 July 2023 at 10am

Part of the plan includes management and implementation of mitigation measures for the socio-economic impacts resulting from the shutdown of the coal-fired generating units at the power station.

The last of the fossil-fired units at Komati reached its end of operational life in October 2022 and was shut down.

The re-powering and repurposing of the power station will be funded through a concessional loan facility from the World Bank, Eskom said.

Power station to be repurposed for various renewable energy projects

The consulting services (“the Services”) include:

  • To manage and implement mitigation measures for the socio-economic impacts resulting from the closure and repurposing of Eskom’s Komati Power Station;
  • Component C as identified under the Eskom Just Energy Transition Project (EJETP)

“The loan facility broadly covers the decommissioning, repurposing and re-powering of the station and critical elements of the Just Energy Transition to provide a second life to the power station.”

This includes the establishment of an agri-voltaics test facility, a containerised microgrid assembly and manufacturing facility; a training centre for employee and community members and (component C) a community upliftment programme that this particular tender seeks to address.

The activities to be undertaken by implementing Agency on component C are divided into Four task as follows:

  • Task 1: Finalisation of the Komati Implementation Plan
  • Task 2: Stakeholder Engagement and communication
  • Task 3: Implementation of Tasks and Activities
  • Task 4: Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting

The project is for a duration of approximately 60 months.

Interested service providers are urged to review the request for expression of interest (EOI) document on the Eskom Tender Bulletin and respond accordingly.
