The Eastern Cape Rural Development and Agrarian Reform department has issued a tender for the design, supply and installation of 5 hectares of drip irrigation for Sasi Farm and equipping of a borehole with solar panels and a variable speed drive mounted on a frame on a turnkey basis in the Koukamma Lo al Municipality of the Sarah Baartman district.

A briefing meeting will be held on 26 August 2025. The department is seeking proposals for a comprehensive project that will include the design, supply and installation of a 5-hectare drip irrigation system for Sasi Farm.
In addition, the chosen contractor will be responsible for equipping a borehole with solar panels and a variable speed drive installed on a frame, which will be delivered turnkey.

The goal of this initiative is to increase agricultural productivity and sustainability in the KouKamma Local Municipality of the Sarah Baartman District.
The construction works shall include the following:
- Survey and design of a 5ha drip irrigation system.
- The supply of all materials, equipment and the installation of the complete irrigation system, including storage tanks, fertigation and electrical works.
- Equipping a borehole using solar panels.
- Connection of submersible pump with safety rope, cables and accessories.
- Connection of solar variable speed drive.
- Mounting of solar panels on a support frame with concrete footings.
- Testing and commissioning.
- Compiling of as-built drawings.

Borehole equipping – water tanks, piping, solar panels & frame
Since the borehole will be equipped with solar power, it is recommended that an 8-hour pump cycle for 14400 l/hr with an abstraction of 115200 l/day be used.
It is recommended that the irrigation designer also consider the crop that requires the highest CSCMU8 when designing. The farmer plans to plant cash crops.
The water tanks shall be two 5,000-litre polyethylene tanks placed next to each other on the site indicated by the engineers’ representative and be securely mounted on a 5m x 2.5m concrete slab.
The slab is 200mm thick (25 MPa/19 mm), and excavation for 100mm is required. One layer of waterproof sheeting (250 micron) should be used under the concrete slab. Reinforcing steel must be placed 75mm from the bottom of the concrete slab.
