State-owned utility Eskom has initiated a tender for a comprehensive project to design, engineer, procure, construct, and commission a 19.5 MW solar power plant at the existing 105.8 MW Sere wind farm located in South Africa’s Western Cape province.

The selected contractor will also be responsible for operations and maintenance during the initial two years of the plant’s operation.

According to the tender requirements, the solar plant must feature ground-mounted panels with a minimum lifespan of 25 years, occupying less than 20 hectares of land. It will connect to the 132 kV Skaapvlei substation via a dedicated 132/22kV transformer.

This 19.5 MW solar facility is planned as the first phase in a series of projects at the wind farm site, with the long-term goal of scaling up to a total capacity of 600 MW, subject to feasibility.

The tender will be open until September 12, with Eskom aiming to award the contract in November and commence construction in the following year.
