Cyril Ramaphosa, the President of the Republic of South Africa

President Cyril Ramaphosa pays tribute to the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, urging South Africans to honor his desire for lasting reconciliation.

Speaking at the funeral of the IFP leader and Traditional Prime Minister of the Zulu nation, Ramaphosa highlighted his collaboration across political divides and his unwavering commitment to South Africa’s democratic institutions.

Buthelezi, who passed away at the age of 95, served as South Africa’s first Home Affairs Minister and played a significant role in the nation’s early democratic era. President Ramaphosa emphasized the shared vision of reconciliation and progress that Buthelezi and the late President Nelson Mandela embodied.

The President commended Buthelezi’s willingness to find common ground among political leaders, particularly between the Inkatha Freedom Party and the African National Congress. He described Buthelezi as a passionate advocate who fearlessly confronted critical issues while maintaining camaraderie, respect, and empathy. Additionally, the Prince’s support for traditional leaders and his encouragement of public participation during the COVID-19 pandemic were highlighted.

Buthelezi’s legacy as a defender of constitutional order and his role as a respected Member of Parliament were also acknowledged. The President emphasized the profound impact Buthelezi had in Parliament, praising his eloquence, diligence, and commitment to upholding the principles and values of South Africa’s constitution.

The President expressed his deepest condolences to the Royal Household, the Buthelezi family, and the IFP leadership and membership on behalf of the government and people of South Africa.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, echoed President Ramaphosa’s sentiments, describing Buthelezi as a guiding elder and emphasizing the loss of his wisdom and experience in Parliament. She recognized his straightforwardness, honesty, and significant contribution to the structuring of the government of national unity. Mapisa-Nqakula concluded by stating that Buthelezi’s name would forever be remembered among those who made a difference in South Africa’s history.

Former Presidents Thabo Mbeki, Jacob Zuma, and Kgalema Motlanthe, as well as international dignitaries such as former President of Nigeria, Dr Olusegun Obasanjo, and IFP President Velenkosini Hlabisa, were in attendance at the funeral service to honor Prince Buthelezi.
