Air force officials warned the leadership of the Presidential Protection Service (PPS) that they would need specific customs clearance if they wanted to transport weaponry to Poland ahead of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s visit to Ukraine and Russia this week – but were rebuffed.
In a week characterised by the South African government’s shambolic travel arrangements and almost farcical logistics, 120 members of the president’s security group, including the PPS, members of the SA Police Service’s task force and other highly trained specialists, were left stranded aboard an SAA charter flight for more than 26 hours on the tarmac of Chopin Airport.
