South Africa’s Minister of Tourism, Patricia de Lille, has dissolved the board of South African Tourism (SA Tourism) after citing legal irregularities in its decision to suspend CEO Nombulelo Guliwe. In a letter issued on Tuesday, De Lille stated the nine-member board was not legally constituted to make such a decision due to the absence of a chairperson, and that the board overstepped its powers by failing to follow procedures set out in the Tourism Act.
The suspension of Guliwe, who was appointed CEO in February 2024, came amid allegations of misconduct and a R100 million tender controversy involving Pomme Express. The dispute has raised governance concerns within the tourism body, with the Institute of Directors in South Africa noting the need for clear continuity mechanisms and due process in leadership transitions. De Lille confirmed she would appoint an interim structure and begin recruiting new board members in line with statutory requirements.
