The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) invites bidders for a tender to appoint a contractor to install and maintain a 70kw hybrid ground-mounted solar photovoltaic solar installation at the Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden in Worcester, Western Cape.

There’s a compulsory briefing on Tuesday, 12 November 2024 at 11am at the Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden. Only one representative per service provider will be allowed to attend the scheduled compulsory site briefing session.
SANBI has formally tasked Optimum Engineering Consultants, effective from 15 August 2024, with providing professional Electrical Engineering services for the assessment, design, procurement, building, and monitoring of the solar PV plant to be improved at the Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden (KDNBG).
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) has allocated funds over the 2024/25 to 2026/27 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) towards a national infrastructure programme at the various campuses and sites of SANBI. The programme includes infrastructural maintenance, refurbishments, upgrades, replacements and/or new infrastructure at all sites.
Scope of Works for SANBI tender for solar installation
- The scope of works per phase includes, but is not necessarily limited to, the following:
- Inspect and test a sample (10) of the existing solar panel’s working condition.
- If the testing of the existing solar panels results in a positive outcome, install 60 x 315W Tier 1 solar panels and support structure in the existing yard enclosure.
- If the testing of the existing solar panels results in a negative outcome, install 118 x 600W Tier 1 solar panels on existing support structure in the existing yard enclosure.
- Install new DC cabling and earthing cables from the solar panels to the DC protection boxes and from the DC protection boxes to the inverters including cable trays and wireways.
- Install 2 x 36kW hybrid inverters with WiFi connectivity.
- Install 2 x 215kWh battery storage inclusive of cabling, trunking and fused battery disconnectors.
- Install the associated AC cabling and AC protection.
- Install earthing and lightning protection.
- Inspect and refurbish the existing electrical distribution network at the KDNBG.
- Commission the new solar plant.
- Install earthing and lightning protection for the solar plant.
- Maintain the solar infrastructure for a period of two years as per the maintenance plan .
Note: All works to be carried out according to SANS standards

during office hours on or before 26 November 2024 at 11am.
Normal office hours are from 08:00 – 16:00 Monday to Friday.
