SANBI issues a tender for rooftop solar system in Bettys Bay - ESI-Africa.com

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) has issued a tender for the installation of a 30kW-rooftop solar PV system at the Administration Building of the Harold Porter National Botanical Garden in Bettys Bay.

Deadline: 13 June 2025

A compulsory briefing session will take place on the 5 June 2025, at 11am at the Harold Porter National Botanical Garden in Betty’s Bay, Nivenia Hall.

This specification covers the supply, delivery, installation, wiring, commissioning, testing and handing over in complete working order for immediate use. A guarantee for 12 months minimum will be applicable on all equipment and workmanship from commissioning for the following:

  • Roof-mount PV installation, including mounting structures.
  • A 30kW 3-phase hybrid inverter.
  • Ten 550W solar PV modules, including mounting structures.
  • An expandable lithium battery system consisting of lithium batteries, a battery management unit (BMU) and a rack mount system.

All components required for the balance of the above-mentioned systems, including but not limited to cables and connections, fuses, switches, isolators, combiner boxes, etc.

The tenderer shall provide full details of the unit offered in the pricing document. These details shall be submitted together with the completed pricing document. Details shall include at least the manufacturer and model numbers of the following equipment:

  • Inverter.
  • Battery.
  • Switchgear.
  • Surge Protection.
  • Mounting structure.
  • Cables.
  • Wireways.

The tenderer is not required to provide a maintenance plan.

The system shall adhere to the below control objectives:

  • Maximising Solar Energy Utilisation: Prioritise solar energy to reduce dependency on the grid and minimise electricity costs by using the generated solar power first.
  • Battery Charge/Discharge Optimisation: Maintain an optimal state of charge (SOC) in the battery to extend its lifespan while ensuring that sufficient stored energy is available for use during periods of low generation.
  • Grid Stability and Compliance: Ensure that the hybrid system operates in accordance with grid requirements, maintaining stable voltage and frequency and complying with local utility regulations.
  • Load Demand Management: Ensure that the load demand is met by first utilising available solar power, followed by stored battery energy, and lastly from the grid if necessary.
  • Export/Import Regulation: The system shall not export power to the grid.
