South Africa Bids Farewell

By Lerato Mpembe

Today, family, friends, and colleagues are bidding farewell to singer and songwriter Winnie Khumalo. She passed away earlier this month at the age of 51 after a short illness. Khumalo’s funeral service is taking place at the Protea South Multipurpose Hall in Protea, Soweto. She will then be buried at the Westpark Cemetery in Randburg.

A Celebrated Career

Born on 20 July 1973 in Mofolo North, Soweto, Winnie Khumalo began her music career at the tender age of 15. Her debut album, Hey Laitie, produced by Sello “Chicco” Twala, quickly catapulted her into the limelight. Over the years, she became renowned for her powerful voice and versatile performances, collaborating with several well-known artists. In addition to her music career, Khumalo appeared in popular South African TV series such as SABC2’s Muvhango and Mponeng, as well as in stage productions and films.

Memorial Tributes

A memorial service was held on Wednesday at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg, where industry peers and fans gathered to celebrate her life and legacy. IMPRA CEO Dodo Monamodi conveyed his devastation at her passing, sharing Khumalo’s great love for her children. “Winnie was someone who loved her children. Every second line when we talked, even when we spoke officially about how we can move a catalogue together, she would never stop talking about Retha.”

A Family’s Loss

Khumalo is survived by her two children, Rethabile and Thando. Her daughter, Rethabile Khumalo, has followed in her mother’s footsteps, achieving success as a singer in her own right. The bond between mother and daughter was evident, with Rethabile often sharing the stage with her mother.

Industry Mourns

The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture expressed profound sadness at Khumalo’s passing, stating, “Her untimely death marks a great loss for South Africa and the music industry.” Tributes have poured in from across the nation, highlighting her contributions to the arts and her role in mentoring upcoming artists.

Final Goodbye

As the nation bids farewell to Winnie Khumalo, her legacy as a talented musician and actress will continue to inspire future generations. Her harmonious voice and dynamic performances have left an indelible mark on South Africa’s entertainment industry.
