JOHANNESBURG – A Tembisa Hospital employee has been arrested on corruption charges.
The Special Investigating Unit said in a statement that it has welcomed the arrest of Zacharia Tshisele following its probe into procurement irregularities at the hospital.
“During the investigation, the SIU uncovered evidence that Tshisele received unlawful gratification from various service providers at Tembisa Hospital between 1 January 2020 and 1 September 2023,” the statement read.
The SIU referred the case to the NPA, the Hawks and the Asset Forfeiture Unit earlier this year.
In November, Tshisele paid back R13.5 million to the SIU, which investigators say is only a portion of his alleged ill-got gains.
The SIU says efforts to recover the full amount are still underway.
The investigation has so far linked R122-million in corrupt payments to at least 15 current and former officials at the Gauteng Health Department and Tembisa Hospital.
They are accused of bid rigging, collusion, money laundering and abusing their positions to benefit service providers.
More officials are expected to be implicated as the investigation continues.
The SIU has already issued over a hundred disciplinary referrals.
