The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs has issued a tender for the design, supply, delivery, installation and commissioning of a 30kWp grid-tied solar photovoltaic system at the Thusong Service Centre Building in Maphumulo Local Municipality within the Ilembe District.
Deadline: Closing Date: 3 February 2025, 3 pm
The KZN Province is expected to contribute to the low-carbon economy as committed by the country through the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Energy is one of the key drivers of our economy as well as basic livelihoods, and the provincial greenhouse has (GHG) inventory has identified energy as a leading sector where fuel combustion contributes more to the province’s GHG emission profile.
The iLembe District Municipality lies on the east coast of KwaZulu-Natal, between eThekwini Metro in the south and King Cetshwayo District in the north. To the west, iLembe is bordered by two districts: uMgungundlovu and uMzinyathi.

The winning bidder will install the solar PV system technology with the following specifications:
- 30 kWp Solar Photovoltaic System Q 68 EDTEA 2024-2025 37
- 30kW inverter
- 550W solar panels
The specific objectives of the solar tender are:
- To reduce the reliance of Maphumulo Municipality on the National Grid for office lighting.
- To promote a lifestyle that encourages the low-economy society within the Maphumulo Local Municipality specifically and the iLembe District in general.
- To grow the green economy sector, especially in the solar PV market within the iLembe District and the KwaZulu Natal Province in general.
