Closing Date: Monday, 17 March 2025
Briefing sessions for projects:
- 24 February at 11am: OR Tambo International Airport – Media Room at Terminal B on Jones Street
- 26 February at 11am: King Shaka International Airport (La Mercy Airport) – Multi Storey Offices (MSO) Building at the reception near the pick up zone

OR Tambo International
For the airport in Johannesburg the tender is for the design and construction of a 5,000kWp solar PV plant. The contract will also include a separate maintenance contract for the period of 5 years.
The solar PV plant site is located at the OR Tambo International Airport. Tenderers should note that all the works are located within the airport’s land site. All contractor personnel and vehicles will require permits and adhere to ACSA’s requirements for working at landside.
A battery backup system is envisaged in the future for the PV plant. The battery backup system envisioned will also require an increase in the overall generating capacity of the plant.
The design shall therefore allow the addition of a battery system and expansion of the PV plant with relative ease. In order to achieve this, the system shall follow a modular design.
The contractor will be responsible for all integration with existing electrical infrastructure. If the need arises to appoint a specialist to assist with the integration, the costs for this specialist will be borne by the main contractor unless otherwise agreed with the employer.
Existing MV switchgear are located at the OR Tambo International Airport main substation. Spare equipment has been identified for use to tie in the PV solar installation. The connection and integration to the existing switchgear is to be included in the costs provided by the contractor. The provision of new MV switchgear is not to be included in the costs.

Cape Town International Airport
For the airport in Cape Tow , the tender is for the design and construction of a 2,500kWp solar PV plant.
The solar plant technology is new to Cape Town International Airport and requires specialised maintenance procedures and monitoring equipment for efficient operations and analysis.
The contractor is therefore expected to improve the efficiency of the associated assets and equipment on a regular basis.
This will ultimately impose amendments to current ME procedures and drawings—even to the extent that new supplemental procedures and drawings are developed.
King Shaka International Airport
For the KZN airport, the tender is for the installation of a 2,000kWp roof-mounted solar PV plant. The contract shall also include a maintenance contract for the works, priced separately, for a period of 5 years.
The contractor shall provide a training programme with detailed information on items that will be covered and the length of the training programme, for the engineer’s approval.
The training shall prepare the King Shaka International Airport’s maintenance operators to adequately maintain and operate the installation. The training shall include hard and soft copies of the training material to be handed over to the employer.
